Mobile phones made it possible to communicate with other people, on the road, from anywhere in the world. Unfortunately, these services are not cheap, especially in some countries. This is where Pinger Desktop comes in. All you need to know about this lightweight application is the fact that it gives you the possibility of calling and sending messages for free. In terms of functionality, it is similar to a traditional instant messenger, but it adds mobile phones to the mix.

Pinger is free and it is available for iOS and Android platforms. Pinger Desktop works on Windows, Mac OS X operating systems, as the name suggests. It takes a single click to install the application, after which you must create an online account. The account is verified over the phone, so you should expect an automated call, during which you must press or tap 1.

Pinger Desktop allows you to send text messages to a friend's mobile phone, if he or she has a Pinger account. Your contacts are displayed on the left side of the application's user interface and you can exchange messages with a selected contact on the right side. You can also attach and send pictures, besides text messages.

Your contacts will receive your message on the desktop interface, as well as on their mobile phones. The best part is that it's not mandatory to install the application on a phone. You should also know that Pinger Desktop allows you to make free calls and send free text messages in the US and Canada and send free messages in over 35 countries from around the world.

If your friends are registered on Pinger, you can find them instantly, by typing their phone numbers on a small window. Once you send a message to a new contact, he or she will be added automatically to your list. The application can also make friend suggestions, if you type in your local zip code. Besides mobile phones and the desktop interface, you can also use a web interface to exchange messages with your contacts.

Pros

You can send free and unlimited text messages from your computer to mobile phones, in over 35 countries. Recipients don't need smartphones to receive your messages. The application is available for Windows and Mac OS X platforms, as well as mobile devices.

Cons

Pinger Desktop's functionality may be limited in certain countries. Phone bills are a thing of the past, thanks to Pinger Desktop's smart functionality. It gives you and your friends the possibility of communicating with your mobile phones free of charge, for as long as you want.
